What is Life Like as an Orthopedic Suregon?
For an orthopedic surgeon, there’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing patients recover from dislocations and fractures.
A typical orthopedic surgeon’s call day is on a Saturday morning, which begins at 6 a.m. and finishes at 7 a.m. the next day. Before meeting with the call team to check what patients came in overnight and what surgeries need to be done, the goal is to visit my patients and have my notes written down.

Right after that, I’m heading to the operation room to pick up my pager.
Operating throughout the day and visiting patients in the emergency room are all part of the schedule.
Just finished rounding up all of the patients and taking notes for the day at 7:30 a.m., and then got ready to deal with a broken femur in the thigh bone. However, we must first sterilize our hands by scrubbing them down to the elbow.
The case has been completed by 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. I’ll usually be holding the pager throughout the rest of the shift, checking in on all the patients who come into the emergency room, as well as those who have infections in their extremities, broken things, and dislocated things.
I’ll finish some notes before the hectic shift ends so I can go home and sleep.
