Larry Brown, the only coach to win a championship in both the NBA and the NCAA, could soon be at the helm of a high school basketball team.
Brown, 76, a three-time NBA All-Star, has been coaching basketball since 1969. Some of his coaching accolades include winning the Naismith College Coach of the Year award, two-time NBA All-Star Game head coach, an NBA championship in 2004, an NCAA champion in 1988, and an NBA Coach of the Year award in 2001.
CBS Sports reports that Brown said he couldn’t retire even though he resigned this past July as SMU because him and the university weren’t able to reach a contract agreement.
“There’s a high school in East Hampton (N.Y.), where I’m currently staying,” said Brown. “I’m going to speak to the AD there. If I do that, I can’t do it halfway. They told me I can still speak and go to colleges, but I don’t want to cheat the kids. So if I’m going to do it, I’ll do it 100%. I’ve got so much I’ve been taught from players I’ve worked with and coaches I played for. I just want to share it somehow.”
According to Forbes, Brown has been spending his summers in East Hampton for 15 years. The coaching job pays about $8,000 but he clearly isn’t doing it for the money — Brown just wants to stay involved in the game he’s loved his entire life.
“I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but nobody has a better background than me,” Brown stated. “When you look at who I played for, when you look at who say beside me as a couch and you look at who I’ve been fortunate enough to coach and teach. I feel like I have so much knowledge that I want to share with other people and I don’t know how to go about it right now. I’m trying to find that.”
Private schools have a reputation for having great athletic programs because student athletes are encouraged to all play sports. In private schools, the basketball teams are usually much better than that of other high schools, but imagine how private school basketball would fair against a Larry Brown coached high school team? It’s an exciting time for high school basketball in East Hampton no matter the outcome.
