Most homeowners would rather have a root canal without anesthesia than have to pay for a new roof. Sometimes, however, new roofs are unavoidable. This does not have to be water dripping from the ceiling every time it rains. Water damage can be in the form of large brown stains on the ceiling. These stains can run down walls. Over time, they may start to stink of mildew. Another sign is that there is visible damage to your roof. The roof could warp or dip. Large patches of shingles could be missing. Parts of shingles may be found in the gutters. Flat roofs may have holes. The flashes or boot covers could be missing. If you still need convincing that you need a new roof, go up to the attic or the crawlspace during the day. Do not turn on any lights. If you can see daylight poking through the roof or under the eaves, then the roof is failing. If you don’t have water damage now, you soon will.
